Conservation

aerial of South Beach

The main goal of our conservation efforts is to develop effective research-based management strategies to live sustainably within barrier island environments. To direct our efforts, three objectives have been devised:

  1. Environmental Leadership - Encourage and grow a public-private partnership that promotes and provides sustainable management decisions for barrier islands.
  2. Natural Systems Management - Provide the community of Bald Head Island with research-based adaptive natural resource management strategies.
  3. Barrier Island Study Center (BISC) - Utilize the BISC to promote and communicate research, develop collaborations, serve as a storehouse for barrier island information, provide exceptional laboratory facilities and be the regional center of adaptive management strategies for living sustainably on barrier islands.

We hope the information contained within these pages is relevant, useful and facilitates active involvement in the process of making research-based, sound decisions concerning sustainable development in barrier island environments.
