BHI WILDLIFE EMERGENCY RESPONSE NUMBERS FOR BHI CONSERVANCY STAFF AND AFFILIATED PROFESSIONALS

As of December 6, 2010 

 During regular operating hours (Monday-Friday, 9AM-4PM) please try the Conservancy staff’s office lines as listed below; if no answer, before/after hours or weekends, please try the cell phones (most of us have no cell signal at the actual office but we do if we are out & about on the island.) You can also try the gift shop, Turtle Central at 910.457.0917, 7 days a week from 10AM-5PM (some slight variations in the winter months).

 WHO TO CONTACT FOR A WILDLIFE EMERGENCY:

 Conservancy Education & Conservation Staff: Please contact in the following order for wildlife related emergencies and call until you reach someone and be sure to leave a voicemail so we can return your call ASAP! The first staff member contacted by Public Safety will then continue to contact other staff as deemed necessary:

If you can’t reach anyone listed above in a timely manner (10-15 minutes) or voicemails aren’t returned quickly, please go ahead and contact the following entities as appropriate based on the type of stranding:

SEA TURTLE STRANDING:

 DEAD: Conservancy Staff will handle situation, DO NOT bother calling state officials. DO contact the Conservancy office, leave a message if necessary, and they will handle the situation; if Public Safety responds to the call because there is no Conservancy staff present on island, the best thing is to pull the turtle above the high tide line so we can necropsy it the next day.

 ALIVE: Contact Conservancy staff first, if no one is available in a timely manner, contact officials below:

Jean and Matthew can help give information on how best to safely move and transport the turtle based on specific injuries. Also, take a stranding sheet or take down basic info such as your name, date and location of stranding.

1) Exact location and directions to the stranding site
2) Number of animals involved
3) Condition of animal (alive, dead, or injured)
4) Identification or description of animal (size, color, etc.)
5) Names and telephone numbers of people involved
6) Date and time of your observations
