Eagle Scouts Donate 25 Turtle Cages

Earlier this year, the BHI Conservancy was contacted by Kyle Hankins, an Eagle Scout with Troop 399 out of Raleigh, NC to see how they could help the sea turtles on the NC coast.

"Kyle was looking for a unique Eagle project," shared Megan Arias, the Conservancy's Sea Turtle Program Coordinator.  "With a recent suggestion from researchers to use more plastic in our turtle nest cages, Kyle agreed to design and build plastic cages that were more durable than those originally used."

"The other scouts and I - 16 in total - put a good amount of work into them.  Overall it took us 6 work days," shared Kyle.

Kyle delivered the 25 cages to BHI this past weekend with his dad.  His Troop also sent along extra supplies so if any repairs are needed then the staff can fix them right away.

"We are looking forward to putting them to the test with our nests in 2018!" said Megan.
