Oyster Spat Monitoring Project

Interested in contributing to research efforts on Bald Head Island?  Then please join our team of citizen scientists as Oyster Spat Monitoring Project volunteers!

The Benthic Ecology Lab at UNCW and the Bald Head Island Conservancy are conducting research on oyster offspring via oyster spat racks deployed in the Bald Head Island Creek. This research will help scientists understand oyster populations throughout North Carolina and determine optimal oyster restoration sites in the Bald Head Island Creek. Citizen scientists can volunteer to count oyster spat (juvenile oysters), monitor water quality in the creek, and periodically check on the oyster spat racks.
