On January 3rd, BHI Conservancy staff and volunteers participated in the annual National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count. During this day-long bird census, staff and volunteers traveled all of Bald Head and Middle Islands, counting every bird they saw or heard. In total, 65 species of birds were identified, representing 854 individual birds. This important information is used to assess the health of bird populations and to help guide conservation action in the future. Audubon's Christmas Bird Count is the nation's longest-running community science bird project.
