Bird of the Month - August 2021

Sandwich terns are a medium tern species that are white and grey with a shaggy, black crest. They also have a signature bill coloration of a black bill with a yellow tip. A good way to remember them is that they look like they dipped their bills in yellow mustard! The oldest known Sandwich tern was recorded here on BHI! It was originally banded at Kure Beach in 1988, making the bird when it was found about 31 years old!

Every month we are highlighting a bird species that can be found on Bald Head Island. Through our partnership with Lew Wilson Art, new prints and ornaments that showcase the featured bird are available to purchase monthly. A portion of proceeds will help to benefit our mission. Collect all 12 of the birds, and receive a free print of the collection from Lew Wilson Art at the end of the year! To purchase this month's artwork, visit:
