There is much to see and explore on Bald Head Island!
Our sea turtle nest excavations are free and open to the public. These magical events give our guests a good chance to see a hatchling crawl to sea with the help of our Conservancy staff.
Excavations take place three days after the nest hatches. Our staff will dig up the nest, take an inventory of the eggs, and release any hatchlings that are still inside. We hope to see you there!
Please be sure to park in a safe spot off to the side of the road so there is room for emergency vehicles. You can learn more about our Sea Turtle Protection Program here.
We are unable to share locations of specific sea turtle nests or share information on which nests are hatching under the stipulations of our permit through the State of North Carolina. If you encounter a hatchlings emerging from a nest, please let us know! Call 910-457-0089 x 5.
2019 Nest Excavations
While we are still hopeful that the turtle nests remaining after Hurricane Dorian are viable, the chances of encountering hatchlings on the beach is greatly reduced. Therefore, we will be cancelling turtle walk and beach patrol ride along programs for the rest of the season. We hope to see nests hatch and host excavations. If we are able to, excavations will be posted here.
