Wind Energy Development and BHI

Offshore wind energy and its associated benefits, as we understand them today, align with the mission of the Bald Head Island Conservancy to foster community-based conservation, education, and preservation and supports the vision of Bald Head Island residents to "live in harmony with nature."

Offshore wind is a clean and renewable energy source, as well as an abundant, strong, and consistent resource that can contribute to a future of energy independence in the United States.  At this phase in the process, and as currently structured, wind energy development in the WEAs off the coast of Bald Head Island will have minimal negative impacts to the viewshed, tourism, and wildlife, if appropriately mitigated (although there are many uncertainties with the actual establishment of the wind farm, the Bald Head Island Conservancy believes that offshore wind energy is a part of a future that provides a sustainable lifestyle for all).

The Bald Head Island Conservancy will continue to assess environmental impacts during the leasing phase.

BOEM Updates

On January 23, 2015, BOEM  published  an  Environmental Assessment (EA)  for public review and comment.  BOEM carefullt considered all comments received, and on September 17, 2015, made available a revised enviornmental assessment (EA) for the Wind Energy Areas (WEAs) offshore North Carolina.  As a result of the analysis in the revised EA, BOEM issued a "Finding of No Significant Impact" (FONSI), which concluded that reasonably foreseeable environmental effects associated with the commercial wind lease issuance and related activities would not significantly impact the environment.  For more information, click on the links below:
